The beauty of the Rosary has always been in its
ability to join us in prayer and meditation with
the Blessed Mother through story-telling. Nowhere
is that linkage more important than in introducing
the Rosary to children.
Elizabeth Ficocelli’s latest children’s book,
Child’s Guide to the Rosary, does that with
simplicity, beauty and reverence. The instructions
on the mechanics of praying the Rosary are simple
and easy for a child to follow.
The book has one page for each of the mysteries
with a simple explanation in language the a child
can identify with, an excerpt from scripture to
help the child connect that mystery to the Bible,
and a one-sentence meditation to help the child
connect that mystery to his or her own life.
The illustrations on each page were created by
Anne Catharine Blake. Using simple figures drawn
in light pastels, the stories of our faith are
depicted in scenes that will be easy for a child
to identify with and even the sorrowful mysteries
are presented in a comfortable and reverent
manner.
This guide is a wonderful tool for introducing our
children to a devotion that will serve them
throughout their lives. And for those of us who
are older, it is a nice reminder of Our Lord’s
admonition that we must accept the kingdom of God
like a child, or we will never enter it.
